FILMMAKER


An accredited member of the Australian Directors Guild (ADG) and Australian Writers Guild (AWG), Karen Borger is an award-winning filmmaker, a graduate of Sydney College of the Arts (SCA), the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and the David Lynch Masters in Film (DLMA). She has enjoyed a successful career in the professional screen and media industries of Australia, Indonesia, Japan and the United States. As an Australian citizen and US Permanent Resident, Karen  is able to work in both countries.

Securing the film option for an award-winning historical novel, 'The Australian Fiancé' by Simone Lazaroo to adapt as a feature represents a long sought-after project finally coming to fruition.

Karen drafted the screenplay for a feature film 'Released' set in New Mexico, USA, with Melissa Chambers, and traveled across Australia as an episodic director of the ABC3 series, 'This Is Me'. 

Another project is the episodic series project, 'Newsraven', which is in development with a draft pilot episode script and a teaser-trailer completed.

Karen is developing and writing these projects, and an MMO game for both Australia and US markets. She is available for writing and directing projects as of February 2020.


Two of Karen's earliest short films, 'Uniform' and 'Crossing The Line' were screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival and on SBS TV. Karen directed, 'The Last Newsreel' for the National Film and Sound Archive which screened on opening night of the Melbourne International Film Festival and in the Sydney Film Festival. Karen's AFTRS graduation film, 'Serendipity' won best screenplay award at the St Kilda Film Festival, was highly awarded at The Dendys and screened internationally at the BFI London Film Festival and Clermont-Ferrand Festival.

Karen worked with various production companies as a freelance director in Australia and across Asia. Projects include high-end television commercials, music video clips, short films and a TV documentary for SBS TV - 'The Last True Action Hero', financed through an AFC/SBSi accord. Awards include Advertising Effectiveness Awards Gold for TVC 'Sugar' and also for Weetbix '9 out of 10' presented by The Communications Council of Australia.

Subsequently, Karen wrote feature screenplays under contract with Lotus Films. One feature project, 'Borrowed Light', adapted from the teen-lit novel by Anna Fienberg, with Karen as attached writer/director, was invited into the prestigious 2006 FTO (Screen NSW) premium development program, mentored by screenwriters Robin Swicord, Laura Jones, Director Geoffrey Wright  & Writer/Director LonĂ© Scherfig.

Karen won a national pitch competition for a cinematic project with SPAA & Universal Music for Australian music legends Tex Perkins, Don Walker & Charlie Owens. The short film, 'All Is Forgiven' screened at the St Kilda Film Festival and chosen for the 'Best of the Fest' national touring festival, in the Woodford Festival, was awarded Best Film at the Wollombi Film Festival, and also screened in Canada as the companion short for John Hillcoat's celebrated feature film 'The Proposition' and on the ABC's Rage and the Sunday Arts program.

Relocating to Los Angeles in 2007, Karen joined the Disney Interactive Media Group working as Director of Original Content for Disney.com, then took freelance assignments for production companies in Los Angeles and New York, before enjoying a subsequent engagement with the Disney Imagineers and WDPRO as the filmmaker/content creator of Blue Sky projects in 2010-2011.
A children's series Karen co-wrote, directed and produced, 'Real Disney Theme Park Science' won the 2011 Internet Advertising Competition Award for Outstanding Achievement in Webisodes.

In Australia, during 2011, an art photography exhibition 'Wanderlust'. was exhibited at the Regional Gallery, the Glasshouse Arts Centre in Port Macquarie, NSW.

While developing feature film projects, in 2012 Karen was selected to attend the Cannes Film Festival Screen Australia sponsored market induction program, held in collaboration with Initialize Films, an international media consultancy which provides producers with strategic advice, working alongside national film funds and media consultants from Europe.

Karen was invited to the David Lynch Masters in Film program with a partial scholarship and graduated in 2015.

Her short film, '100 Miles to Lordsburg' enjoying accolades and film festival success in America during 2016-2017, and a second episodic series project, 'Newsraven', is in development with a draft pilot episode script and a teaser-trailer completed. 

A short she co-produced is the award-winning '8 1/2 Circles' for Slovenian filmmaker, Gregor Kresal.
